Content writing in Newcastle

Creating authentic website content that performs in search — and cuts through with your customers.

End-to-end content writing management from audience and keyword research, to publication and measurement. Whether you’re a Newcastle business looking to strengthen your online presence or a marketing team that needs specialist content writing support, allow me to take your content headaches off your plate.

“Content is King” — or is it?

Creating effective content consistently requires a content strategy (you do have one, don’t you?), time, and expertise most businesses simply don’t have available by the bucket load. You know you need content, and you know yours could be better. But between running your business and everything else competing for attention, it never gets done properly.

I’ve been writing content for websites since 2010. I made my first website in the previous millennium. 👴🏼

Maybe you’ve tried, and it’s unfinished, or doesn’t tell your story. Perhaps it doesn’t drive the performance you thought it might. Or hired freelancers who didn’t understand your business. Or worked with agencies that promised the world but delivered disappointment. The result? You’re unhappy with your content efforts, even though you know it is so important in nurturing and converting your customers.

In a world where authentic, human words matter more than ever, your content needs to cut through the noise and effectively connect your business to your audience. If you have:

  • No time to create content consistently
  • No clear content strategy or direction
  • Content that doesn’t perform or convert
  • Worries about standing out in a world of AI slop
  • Generic writing that sounds like it could be anyone

What does a content writer actually do?

If you’re here, you know your content needs help. But many of my clients know they need some help with words, but aren’t sure exactly what. From understanding what your audience actually searches for, to crafting content that speaks to them, to tracking what’s working – I can manage it end-to-end. You get content that performs, not just sounds good, without the internal resource drain.

Some of the broader issues I often hear are:

"We don't have the resource or skillset internally to deliver content to the quality I know we should…"

Probably the most common barrier to content quality and performance is simply — who is going to actually do it? Whether it’s internal resource you can’t afford to allocate, or a skillset that doesn’t exist in your business, avoid the overhead of a permanent hire and outsource it.

"My business is writing tons of content, but we're not seeing any impact on traffic or conversions…"

One of the most common frustrations with investing resource into content is lack of performance. It could be the most beautifully conveyed content you’ve ever read, but if it’s not aligned to search, is anyone going to see it?

"We're going to try AI / we've tried AI and it wasn't good…"

I’m increasingly hearing this one. Sure, generative AI can help with ideation, might even be able to sound ‘OK’. But it’s never going to capture the essence of your brand. Or connect with your customers, in the way that you need it to.

"We've made a good start ourselves but it took ages and we need to scale production…"

A great problem to have. If it’s a ramp-up following investment, or just lack of time to do more, knowing that you need to scale is one thing, having someone to deliver it all is another. This is a perfect use case for working with a freelance content writer.

What types of things do people use content writers for?

What types of businesses commonly outsource content writing?

Marketing agencies

I get it. I’ve been there (for more than a decade). You need some additional help with minimal fuss that’s focussed on deliverables. Whether it’s just the finished doc you need, or an outsourced SEO content service, I can handle it end-to-end, seamlessly extending your team’s capabilities without the overhead.

SMEs & founder-led businesses

You’ve got enough on your plate. Let me write your content as a one-off project, or on monthly retainer because you might not have the time, exercise, or inclination — but know how important it is.

In-house marketing teams

Busy marketing teams often need specialist skills, whether that’s in a certain type of content, or just extra hands for execution. I slot in where you need support most, as an extension of your team, understanding your nuances and communication styles.

Content writing that puts performance front and centre, without the usual SEO trickery

I’m of the belief that there are two camps when it comes to writing content for websites:

  • Old-school copywriters that are 10/10 on puns and creativity. But your beautiful website content won’t be seen by anyone.
  • SEO-shysters that will briefly rank you #. Probably with white LLM text on a white background, and haven’t got a clue about your customers, your business, and why they matter.

I’d like to slot myself in right between the two.

Content that connects with your audience, and drives performance in search. For me, content which takes into account SEO has never changed — it’s about creating helpful, engaging content that is informed by research, written for humans, and structured in a way that search engines understand.

How does it work?

Of course this depends on whether you just need a quick deliverable, or don’t know where to start (probably with a content strategy). But for most cases, expect the process to look something like:

1. Discovery call & goals

Chat through your requirements and I can ascertain your goals, timelines, understand your business and your audience. I research what your customers are searching for and develop a content plan that works for you.

2. Research & content brief

I’ll provide a brief which outlines the structure and underlying research behind the article. You can see current performance, competitors, formats required, and lots of other BI that’ll help steer the content direction.

3. First draft & revisions

Once you’ve approved the brief, I can start writing some content! With an extensive brief, we’d expect the first draft to be close to what you need, but if not, we’ll make the required revisions to ensure it is peak as soon as it goes live.

4. Publication & performance

If you’d like, I can upload the content, and measure how it performs for you. For larger projects, this can involve keeping a content management system updated, and making further amends and updated if necessary.

How much does it cost work with a freelance content writer?

It depends. But it’s fairly straightforward:

By the hour

Works for individual articles, single web pages, or smaller projects. Ideal for specific needs or testing the waters before committing to ongoing work.

Best for: Businesses with occasional content needs, ad-hoc content needs

One-off projects

Perhaps it’s a new website launch, a content refresh, or a ton of product descriptions at once. One size does not fit all.

Best for: Complex or specific requirements

About Me

I’m a content strategist and writer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, working with businesses across the North East and across the world.

I worked in marketing agencies for more than a decade, as well as five years in-house, and have written content dozens of businesses, hundreds of sites, thousands of pages, collectively millions of words.

I focus on performance-driven content for businesses that value results over fluff. If you need someone who understands the how and the why, let’s talk.

Frequently asked questions about content writing

If you’ve got TOV guidelines, you’re already one step ahead of most businesses, great! We can use these, and if not, a brand immersion process can give me a good understanding of your brand. We can look at your existing content — good and bad — and start building some rough guidelines on your brand voice if these don’t exist.

In my fifteen years in the industry I’ve worked on dozens or hundreds of clients. From asbestos consultancy to lingerie, and across different buyers, specialisms, industries, and verticals. But if yours is different, let’s talk about understanding your business, its goals, and how we get there. Being adaptable is easier than you think.

Rush projects are common, it’s marketing after all. Depending on my availability, these shouldn’t be a problem, but get in touch ASAP and we can work backwards from the deadline.

I’m happy to work with whatever PM tool you use — I’ve probably already used it and love it. In terms of revisions, if we’re not there by the second revision, we never will be, so I’m confident a thorough briefing process can minimise back and forth here.

Definitely an option if that’s what you need. Client facing, if we’re working together on something longer term and it’s of value.

No but it’ll definitely help! If you’ve a content requirement that’s obvious, then OK. But to start from a place of good strategy will help ensure that whatever content we produce meets your goals.

My briefing process is defined to ‘get things right first time’. It’s thorough, and it might seem like a lot of work up front, but it means that the first draft can hopefully blow you away. If you’re an agency or content machine with a robust brief already — even better.

I’m happy to discuss my use of AI tools in my workflow at length with you. I find it fascinating as a topic. I don’t use it for content creation.

You retain all copyright, and I’m happy to work around whatever legal or red-tape constraints you might have (within reason).

I’ve written some pretty obscure things in my time, so I likely won’t be phased by this. But try me! It’s unlikely to be a blocker.

I’ve worked as an SEO for fifteen years. Most content writers will double down on technical SEO, or links, or SEO strategy or something like that. I’ve decided to focus my experience into
